100 Word Story – False Mother (Part Six)

Black grocery bag in hand, Eugene climbed the stairs to the second floor of the house, trying to keep his heavy feet from irritating the old flooring.

Not paying attention to his footing he accidentally tripped on the final step and sent the bag flying out of his loose hand, “Shit. Hope I didn’t wake them.”

Eugene walked down the hallway and picked up the bag, noticing it landed right in front of the master bedroom. When he picked up the bag he could hear a faint sobbing coming from behind the door.

He burst into the room, “What’s wrong?”
