“–ke up! –ke up!”
I can feel something repeatedly pressing down on my chest, but I’m so far into my sleeping state that I ignore it altogether; I’m just too comfortable right now to even think about getting out of bed.
“Hey! Hey!”
A young voice is calling out to me while something is still pressing down on me. Is it possible that I died in my sleep and that it’s the medical staff trying to revive me?
“Alexis, wake up! You’re gonna be late for work! You overslept!
Work? That’s right; I have a job!
Instantly coming to my senses, my body and mind perfectly sync up; my eyes shoot open and I can feel a surge of adrenaline flowing through my body. I kick off the covers and rush from the bed, run out of the bedroom and charge straight into the bathroom down the hallway. I rip back the shower curtains and put the shower on full blast for the hot water; steam quickly fills the entire room. I wipe the mirror over the sink clean of the steam and get a clear reflection of myself.
Naturally, what I look like just waking up isn’t pretty. My blonde hair is tossed all over the place with a few brunette streaks in a few spots. My white tank top is hanging off of my shoulder on just one strap, so the top of my chest bare just a bit. Dark circles are forming a bit around my eyes, but that’s natural with my life.
Sam woke me up saying I was going to be late for work, so I don’t have any more time to waste. I strip down, taking off all of my clothes, put a dollop of toothpaste on my toothbrush, and start brushing as I jump into the shower. I can hear the sound of my girlfriend knocking on the door. She sounds a bit flustered as she’s trying to talk to me through the door.
“Alex, hold on! I–”
I don’t even let her finish before I give her a reply. I even speak with my toothbrush still in my mouth.
“No time! I’m going to be late!”
“But Alex, I made a mistake! I forgot what today is!”
What does she mean she “forgot what today is?” It’s just another workday. I wouldn’t be brushing my teeth in the shower like this if I wasn’t going to be late for work. I hear her coming into the bathroom, but I still go on with my rushing routine.
“Alex,” Sam yells from behind the shower curtain, “today’s daylight savings!”
