I counted the ding of each passing floor as we rode the elevator up to Anna’s apartment. With each passing chime my heart started to beat harder and faster, almost expecting some kind of high intense sports training. I mean, part of me expected something to happen, but I wasn’t exactly sure what.
I was sure going to Anna’s apartment would fix that.
One final chime, and the elevator came to a calm stop.
“Top floor, my apartment,” Anna proudly announced. As she unlocked the door, she looked at me and smiled, “Make yourself at home.”
“I’ll make sure to do that,” I blurted out. I couldn’t help but gasp and cover my mouth when I realized what I said, looking at Anna for reassurance. She chuckled and opened the door, guiding me through everything.
My eyes didn’t know where to start or what to focus on—everything was grabbing my attention. The massive ceiling held a number of glass chandeliers that lit the living room alone. Between the hallway and the front door, I got a peek into a number of different rooms, each one serving a different purpose. A home office with a full desk and everything, a fitness room with a treadmill and weight rack, a private screening room for movies and films: Anna had it all.
“Ari? Arianna?”
I jumped when I heard my name being called, “Here!”
My eyes immediately stopped wandering around and honed in on Anna, noticing she was struggling to hold in a laugh.
I felt my cheeks quickly heating up, “W-What’s so funny?”
Anna continued to try and contain her laughter for a bit long before finally getting it under control. After taking a deep breath, she looked at me with a serious look and asked, “Which room did we just pass?”
My mouth opened as if I knew the answer but no words came out. All I could do was stare back at her, completely dumbstruck as I couldn’t even find a way to properly answer the question. Slowly closing my mouth, a nervous chuckle came out of me.
Anna smiled, her cheeks glowing a bright red, “Adorable.” Moving closer, Anna reached over and wrapped her arm around my waist, gently grabbing me, “Make sure to focus on the next room, Arianna.”
