The ceiling stares back at the sleepless Ryuko, who has been staring at the wooden ceiling for quite some time. Blank stare and mind stuffed with a single thought, Ryuko can’t help but wonder if there’s really some kind of ulterior motive behind her sister’s words. Dressed in her normal orange bunny print pajama set, she kicks off the thick blankets and folds her arms behind her head, letting out a small sigh.
“Why the hell is this on my mind so much tonight?” Ryuko whispers to herself as not to disturb the rest of the sleeping family. She turns over to her side and notices the bright moonlight shining through the window. The clear sky seems endless and stars gleam around the moon. Off in the distance, she can see the top of the school, where Satsuki tends to give her announcements. “You’re hiding something from me…”
“Let’s start spending more time together.”
Satsuki’s words from their last conversation start replaying in Ryuko’s head; repeating one last time, her cheeks quickly warm up and her heart beat races. Frustrated just a bit, she flails around for a moment, “Damn it, why does that line get me like this?”
“Maybe you’re curious to see what she wants.”
Caught off guard by the sudden response, Ryuko rolls back over to see who was talking to her, but all she sees is Mako’s empty futon. A few seconds later, the sound of rushing water from the bathroom fills the house and a bright light comes out from behind its door. Out walks a yawning Mako, dressed in her light blue sleeping gown.
“Mako, you were up? Wait, did you just hear me talking?”
Mako gives a nod when she lays back down in her futon, “Yup. Had to use it and I heard everything. The walls aren’t that thick.”
With her friend laying next to her, Ryuko sits up and stretches, “I guess I don’t have to repeat myself to you then. What’s your thought about all this?”
“Maybe she’s just trying to get to know you on a more personal level,” Mako says. “I mean, wouldn’t you want to spend a lot of time with a sibling you thought was dead?” Mako replays what she just said and tries to correct herself, “That didn’t sound so harsh when I thought about in my head…”
Ryuko let out a small chuckle and shakes her head, “I know what you mean, it’s fine. But still, I can’t help but wonder if this is all a secret plan of hers to get back at me or something. With our crazy ass mom out of the way, there’s nothing stopping Satsuki from doing whatever she wants.”
Stuck with flashing images of her and Satsuki fighting on various occasions, Ryuko keeps her eyes on the ceiling, letting the emotions and sensations slowly wash over her mind for a moment. However, during one of the images, it suddenly changes from a fight to the last time they met at the school.
